Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu

Tao Te ChingIf you're interested in the Taoist philosophy underpinning many Chinese arts most notably the 'internal' styles of Tai Chi, Hsing I and Pakua this is the place to start. Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching is the original Taoist text from which others sprung. Wonderfully written, sparse, enigmatic, rich and deep it bears re-reading many times over the years.

There are various translations of Tao Te Ching on the market and there seems to be some debate among hardcore scholars of Taoism about which is the most correct.

This hardback edition has been translated by Stephen Mitchell in a free-flowing style that attempts to get to the heart of the master's meaning rather than his exact wording and (in the reviewer's opinion) reads like a beautiful and profound piece of poetry. The quality of the illustration and binding also make it a bit of a collector's item. High recommended.
